Construction Monitoring and Testing

  • CNA maintains full service construction materials laboratories for soils, concrete and structural steel testing and inspections.  A licensed professional engineer manages our laboratories along with several technicians who have certifications from the American Concrete Institute, Washington Area Council of Engineering Laboratories, Building Officials and Code Administrators International Inc., and the National Institute for the Certification in Engineering Technologies.  Our laboratories and field staff are supported by a highly competent engineering team who specializes in geotechnical, materials, and structural engineering.
  • Modified and standard proctors (ASTM D 1557 and 698)
  • Atterberg limits (plasticity index and liquid limit, ASTM d 4318)
  • Grain size analysis (ASTM D 421/422)
  • Natural moisture testing (ASTM D 2216)
  • Specific gravity testing of asphalt
  • Tensile strength testing of construction fabrics (tensilometer)
  • Compressive strength tests of concrete cylinders (ASTM 496) mortar cubes and grout specimens.
  • Splitting tensile strength of concrete cylinders (ASTM 496)
  • Verify removal of topsoil, rootmat and other unsuitable materials in areas to receive structural fill.
  • Observe proof-rolling of areas to be filled to locate soft spots or pumping soils.
  • Perform in-place density tests on soils by the sand-cone (ASTM D 1556) or nuclear methods (ASTM 2292)
  • Conduct footing inspections with a drop hammer penetrometer for bearing capacity verifications at footing bottom
  • Deep earth foundation testing and inspections to include caissons, timber, h-type and auger cast piles.
  • Verify proper placement of reinforcing steel to include tying, lap length, grade, size and location.
  • Provide sampling and testing of cast-in-place  concrete to include slump testing (ASTM C 143), casting cylinders (ASTM C 31), temperature of concrete at time of delivery and placement, air entrainment tests (ASTM C 231), unit weight, coring, Windsor probe and Swiss hammer tests, and compressive strength testing of concrete cylinders (ASTM C 39)
